Dietcokeaholics Anonymous

I am Verita and I am a diet-coke-a-holic.

It is July.

Exactly a year ago, I was at the end of day 1 of my challenge. A challenge which I was sure I would fail. My challenge was  to give up diet coke, something that I was most definitely addicted to.

Last year, I would drink up to 1.25L of diet coke a day. Easily. It was a habit, that I had to get rid of. I would habitually drink diet coke at work, and at home. Instead of drinking water. I would crave it. I would get the sweats, headaches and the shakes if I didn’t have it.

I can’t imagine what it was doing to my insides, eating a hole I’m sure. It sure was eating a hole in my hip pocket, to the tune of $1,800 per year.

I took the Dry July challenge to spur myself to quit, at the time, I thought only for a month.

The first week was hell. It took all my will power to not to fulfill my lunchtime craving. I had headaches and I could not sleep. But I got through it. Week two, I was feeling okay, though my headaches were persisting. Week three I had saved almost $100 and was feeling awesome because of it. My headaches disappeared and my lunchtime urge had gone. By week four, I was over it. I didn’t have the cravings. I didn’t want or need to drink diet coke. I felt amazing. I completed my challenge. The challenge I could not imagine completing. It was easy.

My insides were recovering, my wallet filling. July was over, so I made the decision to keep Diet Coke out of my life forever.

It is July.

My name is Verita. I was a diet-coke-a-holic. I am 365 days clean and free of diet coke. I now drink water.
